Most of us do not bother to listen to people when they are talking passionately. Listening is an art to master, if you wish to become leader in your workplace. Follow the following principles to become active and effective listener.1. Always practice to listen to others without concentrating on the barriers in listening spread around you. Listen to the people by observing their facial expressions. Try to understand their feelings.
2. Always concentrate on one person when you are listening. Do not try to listen to two or three people at a time.
3. Concentrate on listening to music sincerely. This will help enhance your concentration in listening to others.
4. Listening means learning new things. You have to cultivate the habit of writing down the salient points to enhance your understanding and concentration while listening to a lecture or a lesson.
5. Active listening will help solve the problems. Always concentrate on the information while listening.
6. If you are listening to a foreign language, try to understand the feeling and essence of the content.
7. Always try to understand the problem from others point of view.
8. If you are having the same experiences, do not over react and bulldoze the speaker with your experiences and suggestions
9. Always nod your head while listening to others and maintain the same facial expressions like of the speaker.
10. Always try to paraphrase the information during the break.
11. Do not try to probe into the intelligence levels of the speaker and ask questions to seek more information.
12. You have to respond to the speaker in the same voice, tone and tenor. If the speaker is enthusiastic and passionate about his subject the listeners are also supposed to be on the same wave length. They should not look at the speaker in a depressed mood.
13. Whatever may be the result of the conversation, if you express satisfaction, it will lead to better relations and understanding. You have to always assure your cooperation for further discussions.
14. Do not expect that the speaker is waiting for your opinion, just because he is talking to us. Wait for the speaker till he seeks your opinion.
15. You should not criticize while listening. You should not attack the feelings of others.
16. Active listening will create respectful atmosphere.
17. If you are not interested in the conversation, try to postpone the same and do not participate without interest.
18. Always try to understand the essence of the content.
19. You should not think to retort while others are still speaking. We may lose listening important points.
20. Stand in front of the listener while talking. Try to avoid folding hands and uneasy body language while talking to others.
